We are exposed to more than 200 chemicals daily as we stay inside our safe home.  In addition to food chemicals and agrochemicals in the food chain, we are exposed to specialty chemicals, which finds usage in daily products.

Food Chemicals – These include food chemicals in our Pizza, ultra processed food products, bright coloured garnishing and during interaction with food storage containers in the form of flavors, food additives, fragrances, preservatives and coloring agents. Most of the medicines have passive ingredients, which are synthetic compounds.

Agro Chemicals – refers to all the chemicals available in the food chain, including fertilizer, pesticide, weedicide residues, and preservatives in plant and animal foods.

Specialty Chemicals – Specialty Chemicals are found in every walk of our life, including personal care products and hygiene products.

The usage of these chemicals have skyrocketed in the last 30 years, the per capita consumption of these products have increased more than 5000%.

We consume or get exposed to these chemicals in insignificant quantities, but the traces of these chemicals could be highly dangerous. Especially in case of Children, even small quantities are dangerous as their internal organs are not fully developed to handle this chemical exposure. The food labels always explain the tolerable or permissible limit but why consume it at all even in traces, when we have the option to avoid the same. With COVID scare, we have started using more disinfectants and cleansing agents but some of these chemicals are harsh and highly dangerous.

Endocrine Society reports that there are more than 1000 chemicals, which disrupt the hormonal function in the body and they are termed as Endocrine Disrutpor Chemicals, which are dangerous. Dangerous Chemicals like Bisphenols Pthalates, Perfluroalkyl, Perchlorate, Nitrates and Nitries interfere with the functioning of hormones responsible for fat deposition, cardiovascular disease, cancer, thyroid, infertility and reduced immunity. Bisphenols interfere with puberty and fertility and also increase body fat, and cause problems with the immune system and nervous system. Pthlates interferes with male genital development. Perfluroalkyl Chemicals can lead to low-birthweight babies, as well as problems with the immune system,  thyroid and fertility. Perchlorate interferes with thyroid function, and can disrupt early brain development. Nitrates and nitrites interfere with the thyroid, as well as with the blood’s ability to deliver oxygen to the body. They can also increase the risk of certain cancers.

How to cut down the exposure of these chemicals in our daily life

  • Consumption of foods that have grown without the usage of Chemicals
  • Cut back on processed foods especially canned/tinned/ packed foods
  • Watch on adulterated food ingredients
  • Reduce the interaction of food with artificial/ chemical products like plastics especially during storage and distribution
  • Reduce the exposure of chemicals in your personal care products
  • Look for cleaning solutions which are made naturally
  • More precautions need to be taken for women during pregnancy, as they are likely to transmit the exposure to new born.
